The Big Knit

We almost missed out on this years Big Knit! We have spent the last few days whipping up some little hats, Cosmos and Crayons style of course!

We made a Ginge, a Sloth, some kitties and some Pugs.

Every year the lovely people at Innocent  (I call them the smoothie people) raise money to help oldies keep warm during the winter Months. For Each smoothie topped with a hat they sell during November, they donate 25p to Age Concern.

How can you get involved? By knitting / crocheting up some lovely hats and sending them to Innocent's headquarters. Not only does this help raise money, but brings people together from all ages to help a good cause.

The deadline to submit your hats is the 31st October, so we apologise for doing this post a little late.

Science Facts Thursday: Postponed ...

We are super busy at the Cosmos and Crayons head office, so this weeks science facts Thursday will be postponed until next week. Sorry to disappoint any budding science fans out there, we are working on some exciting things.

In the mean time, I'll share some rejected Cosmos and Crayons artwork I did originally for the blog.

This one is currently my little picture on the right hand side bar. I drew this before I employed Sloth as my handy helper.

Cosmos and Crayons lettering, which I still love, and will no doubt use it for something at some point. The original title for my blog was 'The Cosmos, Crayons and Ginge, but I shortened it to Cosmos and Crayons.

Science Facts Thursday: Skin

This week we take a look at the largest organ in the human body. No, not the brain, but skin! would you believe it?!
We are covered head to toe in skin, it protects our other vital organs, and helps keep everything in.

We have two main layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis.  The epidermis is what we see on the outside. Under the dermis is a layer of fat cells called the subcutaneous layer, this layer of fat helps to keep us warm.

Sloth here is demonstrating one way how our body keeps warm, by shivering. Our muscles jerk to produce heat.

Melanin also absorbs the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which is why people with fair skin burn more easily than people with darker skin tones. This doesn't mean those with a darker complexion won't burn, so always make sure you apply a suitable suncream.

Continuing the anatomy theme this week with teeth!

A set of teeth is called a 'dentition'.

There are 4 main types of tooth in the permanent adult set, each tooth has its own job to do when it comes to nomming your food

A typical tooth has two main parts. The tooth that can be seen above the gum line is called the crown. Each tooth is anchored into the jaw bone by its root/s.

So there you have it, teeth. Make sure you look after yours, brush twice daily.

The human ribcage.

 This week we are keeping the Anatomy theme going, with a look at our bones.

The adult human body is made up of approximately 206 bones! Wowzers, that's a fair few. We are born with near to 300, but as we grow up, some of our bones fuse together.
Here is a diagram to show where the main bones are located in your body.

Here is a look at the skeletal structure in a sloth, see how it differs to the human skeletal structure.

The bones in our body have 6 main functions:

They sure work hard to keep us functioning, so make sure you look after your bones. Always wear padding when playing sports. I once attempted roller derby, and ended up with concussion, and that was with a helmet!
Eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of calcium. Dark leafy greens, cheese and almonds are rich in calcium.

Science Facts Thursday: Here Comes The Rain

Its Science Facts Thursday!

Today I bring you some facts about rain. I live in a small city called Preston in England, it rains approximately 80% of the time, especially when I have left my umbrella at home.

The water cycle diagram below illustrates how clouds are formed, working anti clockwise.
It starts with the sun heating up our oceans, evaporating tiny droplets of water, which then rise and form clouds (which happens by some form of wizardry). These clouds then hang out in the sky for a while, until they get bored and fancy a change of scenery, this is when precipitation happens, (precipitation is a fancy word for water falling from the sky).
The rain eventually makes its way back to our oceans and rivers, so it can start the cycle all over again.

You may notice different shaped clouds in the sky, they all have fancy names, here are a few, they sound like they should be in a classical band.

Me and Sloth like to be prepared for all weather forces, here we are enjoying abit of precipitation.

Missy's Cupcakes and the apocalypse.

Recently, it felt as though I was experiencing a post apocalyptic world, with no internet. You forget how much you rely on having the internet until its snapped out of your hands. We went with more than seven days with no internet connection, what the jaffa? It's 2013, we have the technology to send people to the moon, but Talk Talk can't provide a reliable internet service.

Its back at least, for now.

I had recently been asked to design a logo and flyer for Missy's Cupcakes , she makes creative and delicious cupcakes that look too good to nom!

 The brief was to design something cutesy and kitschy with a pastel theme.

Nom, nom, nom.

Everything (except the font) including the borders, is hand drawn, then scanned into Photoshop to be coloured. 

Blood, sweat and tears and many hours work went into creating this, and I'm quite pleased with the end result, this was my first attempt at branding and creating something 'professional' for someone else to use.

Science Facts Thursday: Caterpillar Noms

Science facts Thursday! Try saying that with a mouthful of avocado.

Each Thursday I will create a post on an interesting scientific fact. My definition of science is quite broad, so you will need an open mind, also accuracy isn't always guaranteed, as apparently you can't rely on Wikipedia for everything.

So today, I bring you an interesting fact on caterpillars.

Ginge gets crafty: Adventure Time, Jake

 I recently discovered Adventure Time, and straight away fell in love with it. It has an excellent balance of cuteness and sillyness.

I was asked by a friend to make a Jake and a Finn, and have been slowly crafting them together, I found the perfect material to make Jake, super soft and cuddly!

I felt like Dr Frankenstein, I high fived myself once I finished him.

I have set myself the challenge to make all the characters, I'm currently crafting up a Lady Rainicorn and a Finn, so keep your eyes potatoed for updates :D

Ginge Draws: Tonsil Doom

So I've been a little poorly recently, by recently I mean the last nine weeks, it's OK though as the Doctor said I'd be better in a weeks time. This was a week ago, and I've since added tonsillitis to my list of symptoms.

This is what tonsillitis looks like, check 'em out they're massive little boogers.

My besties Wensdi and Chantal went for burritos yesterday, eating burritos is my new hobby, so I was quite saddened when I could not attend as I was bed bound. Its OK though, as the doctor said I'd be better in a weeks time....

Maybe if my sloth companion was a real Doctor, he could fix me up in no time.

Ginge and friends: Burritos at the park

 Since it was a lovely sunny morning, me and my chum Wensdi ( http://whatiswensdi.blogspot.co.uk ) thought it would be a brilliant idea to get burritos , 'cos a girl has got to eat, and sit and nom them in the park, whilst we fill our sketch books with scribbles.

We have recently been introduced to a new eatery called Coco's, which does the best burritos and tacos, so much so I ate there three times last week.
